Many an American, who has studied German for five or six years, has still never learned the pronunciation of the vowels, but is constantly interchanging the long and the short vowels, and will probably never free himself from his error.In the second lesson the umlauts, and in the third the double vowels, in the order given upon pages 2 - 4, are practised in precisely the same manner as the simple vowels. Since the uttering of umlaut-sounds is, for Ame cans, a matter of the greatest difficulty, the teacher should pronounce them Over and over again in the presence of the class, and require the pupils to repeat them after him. If one will only persevere in this course, there will be a gradual improvement in the pronunciation, and it will finally become entirely German.
