Description:John Holloway came to VMI from his home in Williamsburg, Virginia to join some 400 other young men in a unique adventure in education. They received a hair cut, uniforms, and were introduced to the academic, military, and physical demands required of everyone. The entire class welds itself together as "Brother rats". They are schooled in discipline, honor and the need to learn everything. only half survived to graduation. John cartooned for all four years on the cadet newspaper. He drew also for the VMI yearbook, The Bomb. And daily he wrote comments and illustrated them in his private journal - a part of which is published here. Selecting was done by John Manley, the younger brother of a classmate. This civil engineering major edited all four years of journals, and wrote the brief comments.
