Description:English The upheaval of late antiquity is reflected in the Confessions in which traditional thought is perceived as no longer sufficient for a meaningful integration of the individual in the world. While the father stands for a pagan tradition of committed educational and familial thought, the mother stands as an exemplar of a Christian wife and mother. Roman ideal roles were incorporated but internalized in a Christian context. Augustine further rehabilitated the Christian family against a radical ascetic ideal. In intergenerational relationships, humans are bound within the empirical world, but metaphors from this field of view also use the Bible and Christian tradition in order to express the understanding of humans to their fellow humans, God or the church. Following this thought, Augustine carries out a new definition of interpersonal relations on a spiritual plain.
