Hunting England: A Survey of the Sport, and of its Chief Grounds

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (31450 ratings)
Description:PRE-ISBN“Illustrated from old Prints and Pictures, and from Modern Photographs.” (125).Preface:“ If you wish to penetrate the secrets of the country, and to discover its inner beauties, ‘always get over the stile.’ Such was Richard Jefferies advice to walkers. ‘Always jump a hedge’ is a worthy variant of the maxim. The rider across country in the wake of hounds sees almost all there is to be seen of the face of the country. He gallops across the grasses and knows where the going is good. He toils across the ploughs and knows where the soil is deep. He enters the cloisters of the woods, as someone has named the rides, and watched many other denizens than the fox. He has come into touch with all who traffic on the land, especially with the farmer. He has acquired a particular knowledge of those two best friends of man, the horse and the dog (especially if he has ‘walked’ puppies). So it comes about that the hunting man and woman, who tend now to become almost equal in number, may claim to know their England from an angle that is all their own. Some of them acquire what is called an eye for country which is almost another sense. The sport of fox-hunting flourishes in all our counties; and there are always some enthusiasts who take a particular pride in seeing as many districts of England as possible from the back of a hunter. One of these is Mr William Fawcett, who has contributed a great part of the second division of this volume. Thanks are also due to Mr Michael Berry for the chapter on East Anglia.W. Beach Thomas, Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, October 1936. ”We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
