She looked at them incredulously. “Are you fools? Do you want to die? We must hide, climb a tree or something.” The elf took a deep breath. “Maddie, we can hide from those that wish you harm only by running. We can keep you safe, but you must keep up with us! You can’t possibly understand how desperate our situation is. Now, you must run with us this instant!” “But, I—” “Maddie, I will have Tiller carry you if I must.” “But, Shielaine, you must—” The elf turned. “Take her, Tiller.” The thief stepped toward her and then stopped. Tiller looked at her, his eyes growing wide, and Maddie realized suddenly that it was too late. She dove to the ground and felt the wind of the creature’s swing pass over her. She rolled over just as she caught sight of Shielaine and the thief springing into action. Thankfully, the bor-a-loc was young, only about nine feet tall and the spikes on its shoulders weren’t yet fully formed. Nonetheless, it was deadly and terrifying. She immediately dropped her pack and started rummaging inside, but she was unable to make any progress before Tiller leapt into action, his wicked blade emerging from his belt with a sliding hiss as the creature rushed toward him. She screamed, “No!” but the thief ignored her, bringing his blade down in a vicious arc, connecting with the monster’s head as Tiller screamed out a whooping war cry.
