Moreover, they were apiece with features of our political culture. I came to realize that these phenomena were not restricted to the United States; they were evident, albeit less deeply etched, in some countries of Western Europe as well. That realization prompted me to move beyond their depiction to seek a fuller understanding of the personalities and of the mentality of post-modern societies generally. Narcissism was the term that seemed to provide the best characterization of what I was noting. I scanned the psychiatric literature to clarify the clinical interpretations of the empirical political behavior I pondered. In effect, I quarried these writings for ideas that I could use to elaborate my interpretations and to identify further pertinent aspects of political conduct. My aim in this essay is not to refine narcissism as a psychological concept, nor is it to transpose professional psychiatric ideas on political realities. Rather, I employ them to comprehend how and why narcissists have been able to reach the summits of public power and, even more important, how behaviors associated with narcissism have become pervasive in our public life.I treat four leaders. Bill Clinton and Nicolas Sarkozy are judged clinical narcissists. Tony Blair and George W. Bush fall into the category of Acquired Situational Narcissism (ANS).
