Along with American writers Zane Grey and William MacLeod Raine, Charles Alden Seltzer is often credited as an originator of the western genre. He was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, and worked in a variety of jobs to support himself, including as a painter and the editor of a small newspaper. He married Ella Seltzer, and they had three sons and two daughters and during the early years Charles Alden Selzer wrote on paper from the butcher during the years he struggled to become a published author. His lively and realistic style of western novels is a result of the five years he spent living in New Mexico. By the end of his life, he was mayor of his home-town, North Olmsted, Ohio.
