Description:There is an intentional double entendre in the title of these lectures, 'A Matter of Death and Life'.Nothing can take away my conviction that with the Christ event something erupted into history which can have an effect on human existence as dramatic as a rotting corpse metamorphosing into a newborn child! I have preached this for thirty-five years, and will continue to do so.Yet at the same time, neither can anything blunt my awareness that active membership in mainstream churches has been declining, and that process appears to be continuing. In the Western world, churches as we have known them are dying.One is prompted to ask if this process is likely to be halted or even reversed; indeed, if it CAN be halted or reversed. Can churches which appear to be withering and dying live again - vigorously and influentially.Hence the title refers not only to the faith we proclaim, but embodies a question about those institutions which have transmitted the faith from generation to generation.The purpose of these lectures is two-fold; viz, to examine the phenomenon of decline in organised religion, and to examine factors which may counter that process.I offer them in affectionate remembrance of J.D.
