The authors describe in vivid detail, based on first-hand observation, the social, political and economic changes involved in passing from the landlord régime under the Kuomintang, to the distribution of land to the peasants under the Communists, with the organization of the villagers both for resistance to the Japanese armies and for the seizure of land from the landlords and rich peasants. The writers spent a long time in the village living with the farmers and getting material directly from them and from village records.Reviewing the book, International Affairs called it 'a description of the means by which the Communists gradually created a political leadership from among the villagers themselves.
