Description:Utzon's international reputation is mainly based on monumental buildings like the Sydney Opera House, the Kuwait Parliament building and the Melli Bank in Teheran. Utzon has also produced fascinating but unrealized designs for public buildings in other countries, all demonstrating his originality, creative imagination, innovative structural thinking and rigorous working methods.Utzon's only monumental work in Denmark is the church in Bagsvaerd (1969-75). Other important buildings in Denmark are his own house in Hellebaek (1952) and two courtyard-style housing estates, the Kingo Houses in Helsingor (1958/59) and the houses in Fredensborg (1962/63). The Fredensborg estate is still the finest postwar housing in Denmark -- both architecturally and in human terms.The houses were built as attractive retirement homes for Danish citizens who had spent long periods abroad. The charming sloping site is surrounded by woods and fields and forms a beautiful background to the exuberant range of cubic buildings, which are grouped like the fingers of a hand. Built in yellow brick, with stepped gables and powerful chimneys, each of the 77 houses is strongly individual and bears the personal stamp of the occupants.Utzon has always been open to inspiration from contemporary architects as well as the masters of the past. An important feature of his approach was his study of regional vernacular architecture ("architecture without architects", as Bernard Rudofsky called it). Utzon conducted studies in the Mediterranean countries, southern France, Spain and Morrocco, as well as Mexico, China and Japan. It is difficult to point to direct influence in any of these cases. Also in Fredensborg where hehas drawn upon the vernacular houses of southern Europe, North Africa, China and his native Denmark he has managed to convert his impressions into personal, imaginative ideas through a kind of metamorphosis.Tobias Faber was Professor of Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
