Description:Excerpt from History of the People of the Netherlands, Vol. 3 Proceeding with his story of The People of the Netherlands, Professor Blok has devoted two volumes (III. and IV.) to the period of the Eighty Years' War. His narrative runs from the beginning of the revolt against Spanish authority, 1568, to the Treaty of Munster, 1648. The years 1559-1568 he treats as forming the prologue to the struggle for independence. He suggested that this material might be put into one volume of the English version, in which the greater weight is given to the social and economic conditions than to the political affairs of the people. But in this epoch of change and transition many more details were necessary to gain a knowledge of these conditions than in the earlier periods of Netherland history. Part III. comprises, therefore, Vol. III. and half of Vol. IV. of the original, from 1559 to the end of the Truce, 1621.
