Description:Excerpt from An Anniversary Sermon: Preached at Plimouth, December 22, 1801 The Elders alluded to in the text were the Fathers of the antediluvian age, - the progenitors and princes of the nation of Israel. Their names, with sketches of their history, are furnished in the chapter of the text. It is the point of the sacred writer's discourse in this chapter, to shew the foundation of that celebrity which these elders gained in the world, - by what means "they obtained a good report." This was faith. By the vigorous and ardent exercises of faith the elders "subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises," and thus established an honourable discrimination of character with their cotemporaries, and with posterity. The context furnishes an historical illustration of religious faith which may be contemplated with pious effect by the christian, and if weighed with attention prove "profitable for instruction and correction" to those who are addicted to controversy about this religious exercise.
