Description:Excerpt from Physical Diagnosis In the following work are embodied the results of several years' experience in teaching methods of clinical investigation. We have limited ourselves almost entirely to the consideration of physical examination, as this is the department of practical medicine in which students require most assistance. While we have no desire to avoid our united responsibility for this work, it is right to indicate the portions for which we individually must be held to be chiefly responsible. The sections devoted to the Integumentary, Urinary, and Nervous Systems, together with the Examination of the Pulse, are by Dr. Gibson; the Circulatory, Respiratory, and Alimentary Systems are by Dr. Russell. No attempt has been made, except in a few instances, where the original writings will be found to be of special use, to acknowledge the various sources from which we have derived our knowledge of physical diagnosis. To do so fully would be practically impossible, as it would not only entail an enumeration of most of the works dealing with the subject from the time of Laennec to the present, but also render it necessary to estimate the influence of intercourse with many minds, as teachers, pupils, and friends.
