In 1967 he was able to make this dream come true and voyage where no other yacht had been before, along the beautiful yet forbidding coast to within a few miles of the Russian border.In the course of this voyage he enjoyed sailing along a coastline more beautiful that the French Riviera, a cruise up the Bartin River, a spell in Sinop (one of whose citizens was Diogenes), a visit to the nut plantations of Giresun, exploring Trabzon, the ancient Trapezus, with its Byzantine walls and the church of Aghia Sofia, a porpoise hunt with the Laz, then on to the tea gardens of Rize, and finally to Hopa, the last port.Leaving the yacht at Hopa, the party struck inland, first to look at the Russian frontier and the town of Batum from a respectable distance before making for the interior, Kurdistan. Through dramatic scenery, over the 8000ft Yalinez Cam Pass they drove into a new country.
