4.9/5 (14577 ratings)
Description:On August 9, 1805, twenty-six-year-old Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike left St. Louis with orders to explore the upper Mississippi River. As leader of the first official U.S. expedition to the upper Mississippi, Pike mapped the terrain, negotiated with French fur traders concerning their rights in the area, and sought the source of the great river. He returned to St. Louis on April 30, 1806, and immediately began preparing equipment and selecting soldiers for a second trip - the Western expedition, on which he discovered the peak that was later to bear his name. Heading westward, Pike spent the remainder of 1806 and January of 1807 exploring the Great Plains and lower Rocky Mountain regions. Straying into Spanish territory, he was captured, taken to Santa Fe and then to Mexico, relieved of his maps and papers, and eventually returned to the United States under guard.
