This is mostly the result of a young and vibrant college administration, many of whom are Barnard alumnae themselves.Barnard College holds a strange and unique place among colleges today. It’s a women’s college and part of the Seven Sisters, left from an era in which very few women could get a college education at all. Yet, Barnard exists now in days in which a woman going for her bachelor degree is sometimes a foregone conclusion, giving women the opportunity to choose to go to a single-sex college, rather than it being the only option. Barnard is also part of world-renowned Columbia University, giving Barnard’s students access to more academic options and the all important ‘Y’ chromosome. Many people focus on this affiliation unnecessarily because of the prestigious Columbia name; however, there are many classes that BC students would never take anywhere else and are very proud of, like those in the dance and architecture programs. In fact, many Columbia College students elect to take Barnard writing classes, among others, because of the one-on-one attention that Barnard’s small classes afford.The truth of the matter is that, for most women graduating from high school, the choice to attend an all-girls school can be a difficult one to make, especially if that is not an environment that you’re used to.
