E stato membro fondatore dei Soft Machine, una delle band piu importanti del progressive rock e pioniera del movimento musicale noto come scena di Canterbury. Ha partecipato ai primi quattro album del gruppo, lasciandolo nell'agosto del 1971 per fondare i Matching Mole, altra band della scena di Canterbury. Oltre che per il suo genio come strumentista e compositore, e noto per le incredibili sonorita che riesce ad ottenere con la voce, che ne fanno uno dei cantanti piu originali ed ammirati nel panorama della musica contemporanea. Nel percorso che lo ha portato ad affinare le sue doti vocali Wyatt si e ispirato al jazz, fonte principale della sua educazione musicale nonche sua grande passione, ma non si definisce un musicista jazz, ritenendo che questa etichetta sia riservata agli artisti cresciuti a contatto con la comunita afroamericana. In seguito ad un incidente occorsogli il 1 giugno 1973, e rimasto paralizzato dalla cintola in giu; da quel momento ha condotto una vita piu ritirata, dedicandosi alla sperimentazione e alla ricerca musicale nelle opere da solista, alla collaborazione con altri artisti, alla promozione di giovani talenti e all'impegno politico.
