George Carr's Totem Tree and Other Curious Things

Harry R. Melone
4.9/5 (19406 ratings)
Description:Twentieth-century folk sculptor and Civil War veteran in his eighties, Carr began carving totem trees around 1911, using dead maples on his property as a medium for carving numerous faces, figures, animals and imaginary creatures, later painting them in various colors. His "Totem Farm" in the Finger Lakes Region of New York became a tourist site featuring his totem trees and other weird carvings strewn about his property. This may be the earliest publication on a twentieth century American folk artist (Carr is not to be found in any of the bibliographies or surveys of the subject). Carr was a predecessor of the more celebrated mid-twentieth century and contemporary environmental folk sculptors such as Simon Rodia, Clarence Schmidt and others. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
