Description:Excerpt from A Hand-List of English Books in the Library of Emmanuel College, Cambridge: Printed Before MDCXLI HE present Hand-list is an abridgment of a slip catalogue of English printed books to 1640, which was begun in 1909 at the suggestion of Mr C. E. Sayle of the University Library and was completed in 1913. The books (in number about are arranged according to their authors, when known: the titles are abbreviated as much as possible: and each entry also gives the size of the book with the date, the printer's name and the place of printing, when these are known. The original spelling has been retained both in the imprints and in the abbreviated titles. An index of printers and booksellers and an index of places of printing have been added. No attempt has been made to indicate the source from which each book came to the Library; in most cases the evidence is inconclusive.
