She indulges in longueurs and a kind of inspired and quite practical eccentricity which Christopher dismisses as 'soppy'. Yet it is Christopher who, unbalanced by the death of his mother and disturbed by an only dimly understood but implicitly malevolent relationship between Otto Dressler and his father, comes to inhabit increasingly Frances' make-believe world, just as Frances herself is growing out of it.
