Description:The late E. T. MacDermot's two-volume History of the Great Western Railway, published in 1927 and 1931, was the second detailed history of a large railway. It carried the story through from inception in 1833 to the Grouping of 1923 and was soon recognised as a classic with a very high standard of accuracy.Considerable research has been carried out during the forty years since the second volume appeared, especially into the history of the smaller companies eventually absorbed by the Great Western. The locomotive and carriage departments' history has also received a great deal of attention and a greater precision in records evolved. In revising MacDermot's work C. R. Clinker, himself an old Great Western man, has taken full advantage of the expert knowledge of researchers into the various aspects of the Company's history and has carried in new facts from a wide range of sources. Where necessary, amendments have been made in elaboration of existing statements or to bring these up to date, but MacDermot's emphasis on strict accuracy has been rigidly respected. This second volume continues the story from 1863, but save in a few special cases, no attempt has been made to follow the story of events beyond the end of 1921. The history of the Company's last twenty-five years, from 1922 to 1947, is covered in a third volume by O. S. Nock.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
