'No fear,' returned Jem; ' she won't be down there afore four o'clock. But now, about the money! Have you got any?' Katie showed him the threepenny pieces, and was relieved to hear him say that they would do, as she only needed half a ticket. Then they hurried to the station, which they found already crowded with persons bound for the scene of the day's festivity. Here, however, they had to wait for some time, for the trains which came down from the City were crammed with passengers, and it was impossible to find a seat in one of them. As they waited, little Katie kept looking round, dreading to see her aunt or uncle appear, come to take her back. But the fear was vain, and at last, when the fifth train came up, Jem saw his chance, and, with no small danger to life and limb, fought his way into a third-class compartment and dragged Katie in after him.
