Description:NHCs have received wide attention as excellent ligands in transition metal catalysis due to the exceptionally stable metal-carbene bonds, ease of synthesis, and their structural versatility, and they have now become the ligands of choice in a range of important organometallic reactions including metathesis and cross-coupling.This advanced textbook introduces and describes the coordination chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). In particular, it focuses on a detailed description of common synthetic methods and techniques as well as characteristic properties of NHC precursors, free NHCs, their ligand behavior and a selection of their most common transition metal complexes (e.g. Ru, Rh, Ir, group 10 and 11). Current and future directions involving newer types of NHCs and selected examples of their applications are highlighted.
