Four of her books were Book-of-the-Month Club selections, and in 1957 she was elected to honorary membership in the American Academy and National Institute of Arts and Letters. Living in Denmark, Isak Dinesen surrounded herself with brilliant young writers, artists and actors who fell under the spell of her fascination and whose lives and careers she often dominated. She lived to the age of seventy-seven, wraith-like and constantly ill, but with a gallantry and undiminished love of life which sustained her amazing personality to the last.
