He explains that the shadow mice live in tunnels under the kingdom, feeding on regret and sadness. Together with Clara’s brother Carl, they enter a hidden door beneath the church and go down into the tunnels. They pass through the Hall of Echoes, where the water shows people their deepest regrets. Clara sees her mother and her own guilt, but with the Nutcracker’s help, she understands she was only a child and loved her mother as best she could. At last, they meet the Shadow King, who wants a wish of his own so his people will no longer be forgotten. Clara offers a different kind of wish: that nothing loved is ever utterly lost, that toys and memories can find new homes and new meaning, and that the shadow mice become guardians instead of thieves.
