The Cajun Queen -- An Epilogue (Miss Fortune Series Kindle Worlds Novella)

G.M. Jackson III
4.9/5 (33046 ratings)
Description:(I want to start by expressing my appreciation to Jana Deleon for letting writers create adventures for her characters in the Miss Fortune Series. Many thanks for your generosity.) (While it compliments THE CAJUN QUEEN, this Epilogue is a stand alone work.) Two for the rice of one! That's what you'll be getting with this Miss Fortune Adventure. 1.) A locked room mystery. 2.) The aforementioned Epilogue for THE CAJUN QUEEN. . Now consider Fortune Redding's situation. She's an assassin for the CIA who has to live "off the grid" as an ex-beauty queen turned librarian in the small bayou town of Sinful, Louisiana, a couple of hours from New Orleans, after an arms dealer has placed a million dollar bounty on her head. How small is Sinful? It can support only one eatery -- Francine's Café, where she has daily luncheons with her two friends, Ida Belle and Gertie. They have common ground since Ida Belle and Gertie were covert operatives in Vietnam, as Fortune describes it, "back when we were trying to prop up a government there." (Ida Belle and Gertie make a brief appearance to help recap the issues Fortune had to face in THE CAJUN QUEEN and provide continuity as she resolves those issues in the EPILOGUE.) As Fortune also says, "small is beautiful." Given the town's size, she can easily monitor strangers who visit the remote hamlet. "Small" has it's disadvantages, however, since she can't join her fellow CIA assassins and agents in their periodic training exercises to maintain the "edge" they need in the chosen profession. Relief does come in the form of Jim Benson, a friend of Ally's, the waitress at Francine's Café. After his oil millionaire father has disowned him for leaving the family business, and his "sphere of influence," for a legal career, Benson's aunt has passed away leaving him her share of the family fortune -- except she has concealed it in her study with only one clue to locating it. (He and his aunt enjoyed playing "scavenger hunt" games during his youth.) He has searched the room but is stymied and turns to Fortune for help. Fortune accepts the challenge for its mental stimulation but, in the meantime, she receives a message from The Cajun Queen. Her name is Andrea Petain, who has arrived from the year 1793, and has revealed to Fortune that the "Haunted Woods" section of the local bayou, where people have vanished without a trace, is a center for "les courants du temps" -- or time currents where anyone who knows the technique can travel decades, even centuries, back or forward in time. For Andrea and her husband, Antoine, George Washington is President and Antoine has learned from a voodoo sorceress that one of Washington's successors will be shot in a theater while watching a play. Fortune lost contact with Andrea before confirming the tragic details about Lincoln's assassination. Now, she has a letter where Andrea describes finding Antoine on April 14, 1865 as they stand a block down from Ford's Theater. They see a man they recognize as John Wilkes Booth leave a tavern adjacent to Ford's and turn, heading for the Theater' s entrance. As she reads the letter, Fortune asks: Do they step in and prevent the catastrophe? Can the avert the disaster of Lincoln's murder? Are they able to change history, or is history too powerful for anybody's intervention? On finishing the letter, she ponders the implications of the answer Andrea provides. Eventually, she returns to the puzzle Ally's friend can not solve. Where did Jim Benson's aunt hide her will which is locked away in her study? Fortune is trained to "psych out" opponents in the field. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
